How does an individual setup Remote Desktop to connect to a Microsoft Windows based computer on campus?

The computer the individual wants to connect to (Host Computer) must be running Microsoft Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise or Microsoft Windows 8\8.1 Pro or Enterprise, or later.

Remote Desktop will need to be enabled on the System Properties window Remote tab and the Host Computer will need to allow for the user account to connect remotely or the account will need to be a member of the Administrators group. You will also need to obtain the IP Address or full computer name of the Host Computer.

Please note, other editions of Microsoft Windows (such as the Home edition) do not have the option to connect using Remote Desktop.

On the connecting computer, a remote desktop application will need to be installed and the Full Computer Host Name of the Host computer will need to be entered. If connecting from an off campus network, the OSU Cisco AnyConnect VPN software will need to be connected first before connecting to the Host Computer.

I am unable to access network services on the OSU Stillwater campus from my OSU A&M System campus using the Site To Site Virtual Private Network (VPN) tunnel.

The Site To Site Virtual Private Network (VPN) tunnel, which provides an encrypted network connection from any of the OSU A&M System campuses and the OSU/A&M Board of Regents to network services on the OSU Stillwater campus, may be experiencing a network outage. Outage announcements are posted on the website http://announcements.it.okstate.edu. OSU IT Announcements normally list a description of the outage, locations affected, and an estimated time of resolution.

If there is no announcement covering the issue, contact the OSU IT Helpdesk at 405-744-4357 or e-mail to helpdesk@okstate.edu. If leaving a voicemail or e-mailing, please include the following information:

  • Identify the location from where you are attempting Site To Site VPN access.
  • Identify if others at that location are experiencing the same issue.

Please note that the Site To Site VPN is a separate service from the OSU Virtual Private Network. The OSU Virtual Private Network  is usually used to connect an off campus computer (such as from home) to OSU network services.
