This article explains how to stop an issue where legitimate incoming email messages are being delivered to the Junk Email folder instead of the Inbox.

Outlook web app
  1. Sign in to Outlook on the Web at mail.okstate.edu or portal.office.com.
  2. Click the Setting (gear) in the top-right corner.

  3. Navigate to Mail and then Junk email.
  4. Locate the Incoming mail handling section.
  5. Change the setting from Strict to Standard. The Strict setting sends all messages to the Junk Email folder except messages from senders and domains you have specifically marked as safe.

  6. Click Save.

    Note: The Strict setting sends all messages to the Junk Email folder except messages from senders and domains that you have added to your safe lists. Changing the setting to Standard allows Outlook to deliver legitimate email messages to your Inbox while continuing to filter potential junk email.

New Outlook desktop app
  1. Open the New Outlook desktop application (not Classic Outlook).
  2. Click the Setting (gear) in the top-right corner.

Classic Outlook desktop app
  1. Open the Classic Outlook desktop application.
  2. Access Junk E-mail Options. The location of this setting may vary depending on your version of Outlook.
    1. Example: Click the three dots (...) in the upper-right corner, select Block, and then select Junk E-mail Options.

  3. In the Options tab, review the protection level currently selected.
  4. Change it to No Automatic Filtering or Low: Move the most obvious junk e-mail to the Junk E-mail folder.Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)
  5. Click Apply, then OK.

    Note: The Safe Lists Only setting sends all messages to the Junk E-mail folder unless the sender is listed in your Safe Senders list. Changing the setting to No Automatic Filtering or Low allows Outlook to deliver normal email messages to your Inbox while still providing basic junk mail protection.
