I am trying to connect a third-party application to my Microsoft 365 account app and receive a "Need Admin Approval" message. What does this mean?
Our tenant is configured to allow Microsoft to manage application permission consent settings, which is the recommended approach for maintaining security and compliance. As a result, Microsoft automatically blocks applications that request permissions deemed higher risk or not eligible for user consent.
If you receive this message, the application is requesting permissions that Microsoft has classified as higher risk or not eligible for user consent and is therefore blocked from being connected to your OSU Microsoft 365 account.
Can the IT department approve the application for me?
No. Due to institutional security policies and our Microsoft-managed consent settings, exceptions cannot be granted for applications that Microsoft determines require restricted permissions.
Why are some applications allowed while others are blocked?
Applications request varying levels of access to Microsoft 365 data and services. Microsoft evaluates the permissions being requested and allows user consent only for applications that meet established security and risk criteria.
Is there a workaround?
There is no approved workaround for blocked applications. Users should work with the application's vendor to determine whether an alternative integration requiring fewer permissions is available or explore other solutions that comply with university security requirements.
Can I submit an exception request?
Applications blocked under Microsoft's managed application consent framework are generally not approved by default due to institutional security and compliance requirements. However, exception requests may be considered on a case-by-case basis when there is a documented business need, a compelling academic or operational use case, and appropriate risk review and mitigation measures are in place. Approval is not guaranteed and remains subject to institutional security, privacy, and compliance requirements. Use below link for exception request.
