🔄 How to Update Google Chrome

Google Chrome updates automatically in the background — but updates only apply after you fully close and reopen it. This article explains how to check for updates and apply them manually on Windows, Mac, iPhone/iPad (iOS), and Android.

ⓘ Did You Know?

If you have not restarted Chrome in a while, you may be running an older version without knowing it. Look at the three-dot menu icon ( ⋮ ) in the top-right corner of Chrome — if it has changed color, an update is waiting:

  • ● Green — An update has been available for 2 days
  • ● Orange — An update has been available for 4 days
  • ● Red — An update has been available for 7 or more days
  • Grey (normal) — Chrome is up to date or an update is downloaded and waiting for you to relaunch

💻 Updating Google Chrome on Windows & Mac

The steps for checking and applying Chrome updates are the same on both Windows and Mac.

How to Update Chrome Manually

  2. Click the three-dot menu icon ( ⋮ ) in the top-right corner of the window.
  3. Hover over Help, then click About Google Chrome.

  6. Chrome will reopen and your tabs will be restored.
✓ Tip: If you see the message "Google Chrome is up to date" on the About page, no action is needed — you are already running the latest version.

📱 Updating Google Chrome on iPhone / iPad (iOS)

Estimated time: Under 2 minutes  |  Requires: Google Chrome installed from the App Store

On iPhone and iPad, Chrome updates through the App Store. You can apply updates manually or set them to happen automatically.

How to Update Chrome Manually

  1. Open the App Store on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap your profile picture in the top-right corner.
  3. Scroll down to see a list of apps with available updates.
  4. Find Google Chrome in the list and tap Update next to it.
  5. If you do not see Chrome in the list, it is already up to date.

How to Turn On Automatic Updates

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap App Store.
  3. Make sure App Updates is turned on (the toggle should be green).
✓ Tip: With automatic updates enabled, Chrome will update on its own whenever your device is connected to Wi-Fi and charging — no action needed.

🧠 Updating Google Chrome on Android

Estimated time: Under 2 minutes  |  Requires: Google Chrome installed from the Google Play Store

On Android, Chrome updates through the Google Play Store. Most Android devices update apps automatically, but you can also check manually.

How to Update Chrome Manually

  1. Open the Google Play Store on your Android device.
  2. Tap your profile picture in the top-right corner.
  3. Tap Manage apps & device.
  4. Tap Updates available to see a list of apps that need updating.
  5. Find Google Chrome and tap Update next to it, or tap Update all to update everything at once.
  6. If Chrome is not in the list, it is already up to date.

How to Turn On Automatic Updates

  1. Open the Google Play Store and tap your profile picture.
  2. Tap Settings > Network preferences > Auto-update apps.
  3. Select Over Wi-Fi only (recommended) or Over any network.
✓ Tip: Choosing Over Wi-Fi only prevents updates from using your mobile data — a good choice if you have a limited data plan.
