Keep your Windows 11 device secure and up to date by manually checking for and installing the latest updates from Microsoft.

📋 Before You Begin
  • Your device must be connected to the internet (Wi-Fi or Ethernet).
  • Save all open work — some updates require a restart to complete.
  • You may need local administrator rights to install certain updates on managed NEO devices. Contact the IT Help Desk if you are unsure.
  • Ensure your device has adequate free disk space (at least 10 GB recommended).

🔄 Section 1 — Check for and Install Updates ⏱ ~5 min
  1. Click the Start button (the Windows icon) in the taskbar, or press the Windows key on your keyboard.
  2. Click Settings (the gear ⚙ icon), or press Windows + I to open Settings directly.
  3. In the left-hand navigation panel, select Windows Update.
  4. Click the Check for updates button. Windows will contact Microsoft servers and scan for available updates.
  5. If updates are found, they will begin downloading automatically. A progress bar will appear next to each update.
  6. Once downloading is complete, click Install now if prompted. Some updates install automatically without this step.
  7. If a restart is required, you will see a Restart now button. Click it to finish the installation, or click Schedule the restart to choose a more convenient time.
💡 Tip: You can also open Windows Update quickly by typing Windows Update into the Start menu search bar and pressing Enter.

To review a log of all previously installed updates:

  1. Open Settings and navigate to Windows Update.
  2. Click Update history.
  3. Browse the list, which is organized by category: Quality updates, Driver updates, Definition updates, and Feature updates.
  4. Click any entry to view its Microsoft support article for details.
💡 Tip: From the Update history page you can also access Uninstall updates if a recent update is causing issues.

⚠️ Warning: Do not turn off your device while an update is actively installing. This can corrupt system files and may require IT assistance to recover.
Problem Resolution
Updates stuck or not downloading Restart your device and check for updates again. Ensure you have a stable internet connection.
Not enough disk space Free up space using Disk Cleanup (Start → search Disk Cleanup). At least 10 GB free is recommended.
Error code displayed Note the exact error code and contact the IT Help Desk. You can also search the code on support.microsoft.com.
Updates keep failing Run the built-in troubleshooter: SettingsSystemTroubleshootOther troubleshootersWindows UpdateRun.
Device won't restart after update Hold the power button for 10 seconds to force a shutdown, then power back on. Contact the IT Help Desk if the issue persists.
