Uploading and Organizing Files and Folders in OneDrive
Add your files to the cloud and keep them tidy with folders in OneDrive
📋 Before You Begin
Make sure you have the following ready:
• A NEO Microsoft 365 account with access to OneDrive.
• You are signed in to OneDrive at portal.office.com using your neo.edu single sign-on.
• The files you want to upload saved somewhere on your device.
• A modern web browser (Microsoft Edge, Chrome, or Firefox).
1. Upload Files and Folders⏱️ ~3 min
Step 1: In OneDrive, open the location where you want your files to go, then click Add new (or Upload) in the top toolbar.
Step 2: Choose Files to upload individual files, or Folder to upload an entire folder.
Step 3: Select the items from your device and click Open.
Step 4: Wait for the upload progress to finish. Your files now appear in My files.
💡 Tip
You can also drag and drop files directly from your desktop into the OneDrive window in your browser to upload them instantly.
2. Create a New Folder⏱️ ~1 min
Step 1: Click Add new in the top toolbar, then select Folder.
Step 2: Type a clear, descriptive name for the folder.
Step 3: Click Create. The new folder appears in your current location.
💡 Tip
Group folders by subject, course, or project (for example, Fall 2025 Reports) so files are easy to find later.
3. Move and Organize Your Files⏱️ ~2 min
Step 1: Select one or more files by clicking the circle that appears when you hover over each item.
Step 2: Click Move to in the top toolbar (or right-click the selection and choose Move to).
Step 3: Pick the destination folder and click Move here.
Step 4: To make a duplicate instead, use Copy to and choose the destination.
⚠️ Warning
Moving a file changes its location for anyone it is shared with. If a file is shared, confirm collaborators can still find it in the new folder.
4. Rename and Sort for Easy Access⏱️ ~2 min
Step 1: Select a file or folder, then click Rename in the top toolbar and enter the new name.
Step 2: Use the column headers (Name, Modified, File size) to sort your items.
Step 3: Switch between List and Tiles view using the view options in the top-right corner.
Step 4: Click the star (Add to favorites) on important items so you can reach them quickly from the Favorites view.
💡 Tip
Avoid special characters such as \ / : * ? " < > | in file and folder names, as they can cause sync errors in OneDrive.
