Fix Audio and Video Problems in Teams

Summary

Fix Microsoft Teams meetings where your microphone, speakers, or camera are not working: check that you are unmuted, select the right device, and rule out other apps holding the camera. Work through this before calling the Help Desk.

🎤 Fix Audio and Video Problems in Teams
Nobody can hear you, or you cannot hear them.
✅ Before You Begin
  • You need an active NEO A&M College account with SSO access
  • Your headset or webcam plugged in before you start
  • 🕐 Estimated time: 10 minutes

⚡ Check These First 🕐 ~2 minutes  |  Fixes most cases
In a meeting that has already started, work down this list in order. Most problems stop at step one or two.
  1. Are you muted? Check the microphone button in the meeting controls.
    • Teams can mute you automatically when joining a large meeting.
  2. Is your headset switched on and charged? Bluetooth headsets that appear connected can still be asleep.
  3. Is the right device selected? Open the device settings from the meeting controls and check the microphone, speaker, and camera each point at what you are actually using.
    • This is the single most common cause. A laptop docked to a monitor often defaults to the monitor’s speakers.
  4. Is your camera covered? Many laptops have a physical shutter or a function key that disables it.
💡 Tip: Teams has a built-in test call that plays your voice back to you. Use it before an important meeting rather than during one.

🔧 If It Still Does Not Work 🕐 ~5 minutes  |  Deeper causes
⚠️ Note: These steps come from Microsoft’s current published documentation rather than from a walkthrough on a NEO computer. The button names should match; if yours differ, tell the Help Desk so this article can be corrected.
  1. Another app has the camera. Close Zoom, the Camera app, and any other Teams or browser window that might be holding it.
    • Only one app can use a webcam at a time. This is the usual cause of a black camera image.
  2. Leave and rejoin the meeting. Faster than restarting Teams and fixes a surprising amount.
  3. Restart Teams completely, including from the system tray so it is not just minimized.
  4. Try the browser version at teams.microsoft.com. If it works there, the problem is the app on that computer, not your account or your hardware.
  5. Restart the computer. This clears audio devices that have got into a bad state.
💡 Tip: Tell the Help Desk whether the browser version worked. That one fact separates an app problem from a hardware problem and saves a round of questions.

👥 When It Is Not You 🕐 ~2 minutes  |  Worth knowing
  1. If one person sounds robotic or keeps freezing, the problem is at their end — usually their connection, not the meeting.
  2. If everyone sounds bad at once, suspect your own connection. Turn your camera off; video uses far more bandwidth than audio.
  3. Echo almost always comes from one person having both speakers and an open microphone in the same room. Muting when not speaking fixes it.
⚠️ Note: If you are in a room with several people on their own laptops, only one should have speakers and microphone on. The rest should join muted with audio off.
