🔍 Find and Join a Team or Channel
Get into the shared space your department already uses.
✅ Before You Begin
- You need an active NEO A&M College account with SSO access
- An internet connection is required
- 🕐 Estimated time: 10 minutes
📚 Team, Channel, or Chat? Read first | ~2 minutes
These three get used interchangeably in conversation and mean quite different things in the app.
- A team is a group of people with shared files and conversations — a department, a committee, a course.
- A channel is a topic inside a team. Every team has a General channel and can have more.
- A chat is a private conversation outside any team. It has no shared file space and cannot be read back by somebody who joins later.
💡 Tip: If a new colleague would need to read it in six months, put it in a team channel. If it stops mattering by Friday, a chat is fine.
➕ Join a Team 🕐 ~3 minutes | Teams app
⚠️ Note: These steps come from Microsoft’s current published documentation rather than from a walkthrough on a NEO computer. The button names should match; if yours differ, tell the Help Desk so this article can be corrected.
- Select Teams in the column of icons on the left.
- Select Join or create a team at the bottom of the team list.
- Search for the team by name, or enter a join code if you were given one.
- Some teams are private and will not appear in search. You have to be added by an owner.
- Select Join.
⚠️ Note: If you cannot find a team you were told to join, it is almost certainly private. Ask the person who mentioned it to add you — the Help Desk cannot add you to a team it does not own.
📁 Work With Channels 🕐 ~3 minutes | Inside a team
- Select a team, then a channel beneath it. Conversations appear under Posts.
- Select Reply under an existing post to keep a conversation together.
- Use Post in channel to start a new topic.
- Replying keeps a thread readable. Starting a new post for a reply is the main reason channels become hard to follow.
- Select Shared at the top of a channel to see its files.
💡 Tip: Channels you care about can be pinned or shown so they stay visible. Anything you never read can be hidden without leaving the team.
