🔧 Fix OneDrive Sync Problems
Files stuck, missing, or refusing to upload.
✅ Before You Begin
  • You need an active NEO A&M College account with SSO access
  • An internet connection is required
  • 🕐 Estimated time: 15 minutes
📌 Jump to Your Section

🔍 Check the Status First 🕐 ~2 minutes  |  Near the clock
  1. Select the OneDrive cloud icon near the clock.
  2. Read what it says. OneDrive usually names the problem directly.
    • “Signed out”, “Storage full”, and “Action needed” are all telling you exactly what to fix.
  3. Check the file itself in File Explorer — a red cross badge marks the specific file that will not sync.
💡 Tip: One badly named file can stall a whole folder. Finding which one is usually faster than restarting anything.

⚠️ Common Causes 🕐 ~5 minutes  |  In order of likelihood
  1. The file name has a character OneDrive will not accept, such as " * : < > ? / \ |, or it ends in a space or a full stop.
    • Rename the file and it syncs.
  2. The path is too long. Deeply nested folders with long names hit a limit. Move the folder nearer the top.
  3. Your OneDrive is full. The status icon says so; free space or contact the Help Desk.
  4. The file is open. A document open in Word or Excel may not sync until it is closed.
  5. You are signed out. Sign back in from the OneDrive icon.
⚠️ Note: OneDrive syncs whole files, not parts. A very large file that keeps restarting on an unstable connection may never finish — try it on a wired connection.

🔄 Restart Sync 🕐 ~5 minutes  |  If the above did not help
⚠️ Note: These steps come from Microsoft’s current published documentation rather than from a walkthrough on a NEO computer. The button names should match; if yours differ, tell the Help Desk so this article can be corrected.
  1. Select the OneDrive icon, then the settings gear, then Pause syncing, and resume it after a minute.
  2. If that does not help, select Quit OneDrive and reopen it from the Start menu.
  3. Restart the computer.
🚨 Warning: Do not sign out of OneDrive, and do not delete the local OneDrive folder to force a fresh sync. Anything not yet uploaded would be lost. Contact the Help Desk instead.
💡 Tip: For the Help Desk: the exact wording of the OneDrive status message, and the name of the file with the red badge, are the two things that identify this fastest.
