What network devices are not allowed to be connected to the Data Communications Network of Oklahoma State University and what are the descriptions of those network devices?

Includes, but is not limited to hubs, switches, repeaters, routers, network modems and wireless access points.

The above devices may be incorrectly configured or incompatible with the OSU Network causing outages and reliability problems to all or part of the network. Devices not approved for use on OSU's Data Communication Network will be disabled to ensure the stability and availability of the network.

Below are descriptions of some network devices not allowed to be plugged into the OSU Data Communications Network:

  • Network Hub - A network hardware device for connecting multiple Ethernet devices together and making them act as a single network segment.
  • Network Switch - A networking hardware device for connecting other Ethernet devices on a computer network and communicating by using packet switching to receive, process, and forward data to the destination device.
  • Network Repeater - A network hardware device for retransmitting a received signal with more power and to an extended geographical or topological network boundary than what would be capable with the original signal.
  • Network Router - A network hardware device for forwarding data packets between computer networks. Routers basically perform the traffic directing functions on the Internet.
  • Network Modem - A network hardware device for converting data into a format suitable for a transmission medium, such as network cable, so that it can be transmitted from computer to computer.
