Purpose
This General Documentation article will help Students, Staff, Faculty, and Alumni to understand when they can use the Windows 11 upgrade file found on the SDC.
General Information
When accessing the Software Distribution Center (SDC), the provided Windows 11 installation media is specifically designed for an in-place upgrade of a device with a pre-existing, activated version of Windows (e.g., Windows 10, Windows 10 Pro). This package facilitates the transition to Windows 11 while retaining existing data and configurations.
It is critical to note that the media does not include an embedded or a new product key. The installation process leverages the existing digital license or key already present on the device. License validation is a prerequisite; the upgrade will fail if the target system does not possess a valid, activated Windows license. This package is not intended for a clean or full installation of the operating system.
OSU EIT does not offer a full install of Windows 11 for personal use on a personal device.
