Summary
Move Duo to a replacement phone without losing access to your NEO account - the order that works when you still have the old phone, and what to do when you do not. Keeping the same phone number does not carry Duo across.
Body
📱 Moving Duo MFA to a New Phone
Keep access to your NEO account when you replace, upgrade, or lose your phone.
✅ Before You Begin
- Your GoldKey username and password
- If you still have the old phone: keep it powered on and nearby until you finish
- 🕐 Estimated time: 5 minutes with the old phone, longer without it
✅ If You Still Have Your Old Phone 🕐 ~5 minutes | The easy path
🚨 Warning: Do this before you factory-reset, wipe, or trade in the old phone. Once the old phone is gone you cannot approve the prompt that authorises adding the new one, and recovery needs the Help Desk.
- Install Duo Mobile from the app store on your new phone. Do not open it yet.
- On a computer, go to the Duo Device Portal and sign in with your GoldKey. Approve the prompt on your old phone.
- Choose Add a device and follow the steps to add your new phone.
- Scan the QR code with Duo Mobile on the new phone.
- Send a test prompt and confirm it arrives on the new phone.
- Only now, remove the old phone from your device list — then wipe or trade it in.
💡 Tip: While you are in the device portal, add a second device (a tablet, or a family member's phone you can borrow). It is the difference between a two-minute fix and a phone call next time.
🚫 If Your Old Phone Is Lost, Broken, or Already Wiped 🕐 Help Desk required
If you enrolled a backup device earlier, use it to sign in to the Duo Device Portal and add your new phone using the steps above.
If you have no other enrolled device, you cannot fix this yourself — that is by design, because anyone who could would also be able to take over your account.
- Call the IT Help Desk at (918) 540-6099, or come to the walk-in desk. Be ready to verify your identity.
- The Help Desk can issue you a temporary way to get back in so you can enrol the new phone.
- Enrol the new phone straight away, then add a backup device.
🚨 Warning: If your phone was stolen, say so when you call. That is a security incident, not just a lockout, and it is handled differently — and faster.
❓ "But I Kept the Same Phone Number"
Keeping your number does not carry Duo across. The approval is tied to the app installation on the physical device, not to your phone number, so a new handset needs to be enrolled even when nothing about your number changed.
Restoring a phone backup usually does not carry it across either. Treat a new phone as a new device every time.
