Questions & Answers

How do I determine my network device's wired (Ethernet) MAC, Physical Address or Ethernet ID?

See the "Related Articles" section of this page for step-by-step instructions.

A MAC (media access control) address of a network device is a unique identifier assigned to the device's network interface card by the card's manufacturer. The address is used for interface identification and location addressing for network traffic (example: 00:1A:2B:86:37:12, 09-1A-8F-3E-AF-FF).

How do I determine my network device's wired (Ethernet) IPv4 Address?

See the "Related Articles" section of this page for step-by-step instructions.

An IP (Internet Protocol) address is an identifier assigned to a computer or device connected the OSU network. It is used for interface identification and location addressing for network traffic (example: 139.78.000.000, 10.192.000.000, 169.254.118.73, 192.168.0.2, etc.).

A new network jack has been installed in my room or office on campus. How do I request to have the network jack activated for use?

To request a network jack activation, click on the "Jack Activation" link in the "Related Services/Offerings" section on the right side of this page.

Be sure to have the following information available:

  • Building name and\or building number: Provide the name of the building in which you are trying to connect to the network. If the location is a residential hall or apartment complex on campus, please include the building number.
  • Room, apartment, or office number: Provide the room, apartment, or office number in which you are trying to connect to the network.
  • Jack number: Provide the jack number labeled on the wall jack to which your device is connected.

How do I submit a request for a wired network jack activation\enable?

To request a network jack activation, click on the "Jack Activation" link in the "Related Services/Offerings" section on the right side of this page.

Be sure to have the following information available:

  • Building name and\or building number: Provide the name of the building in which you are trying to connect to the network. If the location is a residential hall or apartment complex on campus, please include the building number.
  • Room, apartment, or office number: Provide the room, apartment, or office number in which you are trying to connect to the network.
  • Jack number: Provide the jack number labeled on the wall jack to which your device is connected.

How do I activate an ethernet jack in my room or apartment within a Residential Hall?

Residents in a residential hall/dorm room or apartment will need to reach out to MyResNet support at 833-548-6849 or support@myresnet.com or visit https://okstate.apogee.us/ for activating Ethernet jacks.

What network resources are available to users on the OSUGUEST Network?:

Users connecting to the OSUGUEST network will only have internet access and internet accessibile data systems. Network resources will be unavailable to users on the OSUGUEST Network. Users looking to utilize network resources will need to connect to Eduroam or OSUREGISTERED networks.

How long until a network port is deactivated?

A network port is deactivated if the port has not seen traffic or had usage within 90 days. Please note some ports are left active in some areas because they are mission-critical (eg Whitehurst) or the area pays for their equipment (eg Athletics, ResLife) or if switch uptime is less than 90 days.

I connected to the wired network on campus, but have no network connectivity. I am getting an IPV4 address that starts with 169.254 and need to know how to remove this IP address and acquire a new one.

The vast majority of on campus Ethernet IPV4 addresses should start with numbers 139.78 or 10. DCHP servers automatically assign these IPV4 addresses. If it takes too long to acquire the IPV4 address, the operating system may assign itself an IP address. These will start with the number 169.254.

My wired (Ethernet) network connection is slow. What steps can I take to potentially improve network communication?

Visit the website http://speedtest.net and select Begin Test on the page. Upload and Download speeds of 10 megabits per second (Mb/s) or higher are expected transmissions speeds.

For Microsoft Windows operating systems, perform a Disk Cleanup.

For all operating systems, scan your computer for viruses, if you have an Anti-virus software installed on your computer. It is recommended to perform a full scan of your computer to ensure that a virus is not slowing network connectivity.

Once completed, reboot\restart your computer.  Go back to the website http://speedtest.net and run the test again.

If the Upload and/or Download speeds are the same or close to previous readings, connect another network Ethernet cable from your computer to the orange network wall jack (if available), and run the test again.

If the Upload and/or Download speeds are still unacceptable, contact the OSU IT Helpdesk with the following information:

  • Building name and\or building number: Provide the name of the building in which you are trying to connect to the network. If the location is a residential hall or apartment complex on campus, please include the building number.
  • Room, apartment, or office number: Provide the room, apartment, or office number in which you are trying to connect to the network.
  • Jack number: Provide the jack number labeled on the orange wall jack to which your device is connected.
  • Ping (ms), download speed (Mb/s), and upload speed (Mb/s): Provide the results of the last speed test.

How do I setup my Xbox One to avoid being blocked when connecting to an Ethernet connection?

According to Microsoft, an update was applied to Xbox One devices that enable a feature known as Universal Plug and Play (UPnP). This feature allows Xbox One devices to scan any network they are connected to in attempt to find other Xbox One devices. The feature was designed to allow simple file sharing between devices. Due to security reasons, OSU does not allow any device to scan OSU networks and thus this feature must be turned off prior to attempting to connect Xbox One devices.

How do I find the Ethernet Physical (MAC) Address of my XBox One?

The Ethernet Physical (MAC) Address can be found on the Network Settings screen next to the Wired MAC label.

I connected to the wired network on campus, but have no network connectivity. I am getting an IPv4 address starting with 192 and need to collect ARP table information.

ARP table information can be collected from the Microsoft Windows Command Prompt window or the Apple Mac OSX\OS terminal.

How do I determine the connection speed between my computer’s network interface card (NIC) and the connected network switch?

The network connection speed (or link speed) can be determined from the network Ethernet adapter properties in Control Panel in Microsoft Windows or the Network Utility in Mac OS\OSX.

What are the IPv4 address types associated with the OSU Stillwater and OSU Tulsa wired network?

The OSU Stillwater and Tulsa wired network use 139.78.###.### format for public IPv4 addresses and 10.###.###.### format for private IPv4 addresses. The identification of the IP addresses shows the network (DHCP server) assigned the IP address.

A Non-OSU IP address format of 192.###.###.### can be assigned to an OSU Stillwater and Tulsa wired connected network device by a personal router back feeding into the system. ARP table information allows IT technicians to locate the offending devices and disconnect them from the wired network.

A Self Assigned IPv4 address format of 169.254.###.### is assigned when a computer is unable to communicate with the DHCP server to acquire IP settings, forcing the computer to assign itself an IPv4 address so it is not caught in an endless loop of attempted connection.

Who do I contact for wired network connectivity issues in residential halls or dorm rooms?

Individuals experiencing wired network connectivity issues in the residential halls will need to reach out to MyResNet support at 833-548-6849 or support@myresnet.com or visit https://okstate.apogee.us/ .
