Installing Microsoft Office 365 on a Mac
Step-by-step guide for NEO A&M College students, faculty, and staff to download, install, and activate Microsoft Office 365 on a Mac using their institutional account.
📋 Before You Begin
- A valid NEO A&M College email address and Microsoft 365 account (e.g., username@neo.edu)
- A Mac running macOS 12 (Monterey) or later
- An active internet connection
- At least 10 GB of available disk space
- Administrator rights on your Mac (required to install software)
- Estimated time: 15–30 minutes (depending on internet speed)
🔐 Step 1 – Sign In to the Microsoft 365 Portal ⏱️ Est. Time: 2–3 minutes | 🍎 macOS 12+
- Open your web browser (Safari, Chrome, or Firefox) and navigate to portal.office.com.
- Click Sign in.
- Enter your NEO A&M College email address (e.g., username@neo.edu) and click Next.
- Enter your password and complete any Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) prompts if required.
- Click Sign in. You will be taken to your Microsoft 365 home page.
💡 Tip: Use your full NEO A&M College email address (username@neo.edu) when signing in. Do not use a personal email — only your institutional account grants access to Office 365.
⬇️ Step 2 – Download Office 365 ⏱️ Est. Time: 2–5 minutes | 🍎 macOS 12+
- On the Microsoft 365 home page, click Install apps in the upper-right corner of the page.
- From the drop-down menu, select Microsoft 365 apps.
- A setup file named Microsoft_365_and_Office_Installer.pkg will begin downloading automatically.
- Wait for the download to complete before proceeding.
⚠️ Note: If you do not see the Install apps button, your account may not have an active Microsoft 365 license. Contact the IT Help Desk for assistance.
⚙️ Step 3 – Run the Office Installer ⏱️ Est. Time: 5–20 minutes | 🍎 macOS 12+
- Once the download is complete, open your Downloads folder or click the downloaded file in your browser.
- Double-click Microsoft_365_and_Office_Installer.pkg to launch the installer.
- If prompted by macOS security, click Open to allow the installer to run.
- Follow the on-screen prompts: click Continue, agree to the license agreement, then click Install.
- Enter your Mac administrator username and password when prompted, then click Install Software.
- The Office installation will begin. You will see a progress bar on screen.
- Do not close the window or shut down your Mac during this process.
- Click Close when the installation is complete.
⚠️ Note: Installation typically takes 5–20 minutes depending on your internet speed. Keep your Mac plugged in and connected to the internet throughout this process.
💡 Tip: If macOS blocks the installer, go to System Settings > Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway next to the Office installer message. Alternatively, right-click (or Control-click) the .pkg file and select Open.
✅ Step 4 – Activate Office 365 ⏱️ Est. Time: 2–3 minutes | 🍎 macOS 12+
- After installation completes, open any Office application such as Word, Excel, or Outlook from your Applications folder or Launchpad.
- You will be prompted to sign in. Click Get Started or Sign In.
- Enter your NEO A&M College email address (e.g., username@neo.edu).
- Enter your password and complete any MFA prompts if required.
- Once signed in, Office 365 will be activated and ready to use.
💡 Tip: Office 365 requires an internet connection at least once every 30 days to verify your license. Updates install automatically in the background via Microsoft AutoUpdate — no manual action needed.
🔍 Step 5 – Verify Your Installation ⏱️ Est. Time: 1–2 minutes | 🍎 macOS 12+
- Open Microsoft Word (or any other Office app).
- In the top menu bar, click the application name (e.g., Word) > About Word.
- Confirm the version information is displayed and that the application is activated.
- Alternatively, in any Office app select the app name from the top menu, then click Sign In to confirm your NEO A&M College account is linked.
💡 Tip: If you are no longer affiliated with NEO A&M College, your access to Microsoft 365 may be revoked. Contact the IT Help Desk if you believe your access has been incorrectly removed.
🛠️ Troubleshooting
Installation fails or freezes: Ensure you have a stable internet connection and at least 10 GB of available disk space. If macOS blocks the installer, go to System Settings > Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway next to the Office installer message.
Cannot sign in: Verify you are using your correct NEO A&M College email and password. If you have forgotten your password, use the self-service password reset at account.activedirectory.windowsazure.com or contact the IT Help Desk.
Office is not activating: Make sure you are signed in with your institutional account. If the issue persists, open any Office app, go to the app menu, click Sign Out, then sign back in with your username@neo.edu credentials.
"You have reached your installation limit": Microsoft 365 licenses allow installation on up to 5 devices. Sign in to portal.office.com, navigate to My Account > Devices, and deactivate an older installation before installing on a new device.
⚠️ Note: If macOS displays "Microsoft Office can't be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software", right-click (or Control-click) the installer file, select Open, and confirm in the dialog box.
