🔋 Troubleshoot Laptop Battery & Power Issues
How to check your laptop's battery health, fix common charging problems, and extend battery life on Windows and macOS.
✅ Before You Begin
Use the charger and cable that came with your laptop, or a known-good replacement of the correct wattage.
Save your work, since some steps may involve restarting the computer.
Note any warning messages you see, such as "plugged in, not charging" or a battery service warning, to share with support if needed.
Step 1 — Fix charging problems
🕐 ~5 min
- Confirm the charger is firmly plugged into both the laptop and a working wall outlet, and check the cable for visible damage.
- Try a different outlet, and if your charger has a removable cable, try a known-good cable.
- Inspect the laptop's charging port for dust or debris and gently clear it if needed.
- Restart the laptop, which often clears a temporary "plugged in, not charging" state.
⚠ Warning: Do not use a damaged charger or a frayed cable — stop using it and request a replacement, as it can be a fire or shock hazard.
Step 2 — Check battery health
🕐 ~5 min
On Windows
- Open Command Prompt and run powercfg /batteryreport.
- Open the generated HTML report and compare Full Charge Capacity to Design Capacity to gauge wear.
On macOS
- Open System Settings > Battery and click the i (info) icon next to Battery Health.
- Check whether the status reads Normal or recommends service.
💡 Tip: Battery capacity naturally declines with age. A noticeably shorter runtime than when the laptop was new usually points to normal wear.
Step 3 — Adjust power settings
🕐 ~3 min
- On Windows, open Settings > System > Power & battery and choose a balanced or power-saver mode.
- On macOS, open System Settings > Battery and enable Low Power Mode when running on battery.
- Lower your screen brightness and shorten the screen-off timeout to reduce power draw.
💡 Tip: Closing apps that run constantly in the background can meaningfully improve battery runtime.
Step 4 — Extend battery life
🕐 ~3 min
- Keep your operating system and drivers up to date, as updates often improve power management.
- Avoid exposing the laptop to extreme heat or cold, which shortens battery lifespan.
- Unplug unused USB devices and accessories that draw power from the laptop.
⚠ Warning: If the battery is swollen, very hot, or leaking, stop using the laptop immediately and contact the NEO IT Department — do not attempt to charge or open it.
