How to Lock or Sign Out of Windows 11

🔒 How to Lock or Sign Out of Windows 11
Protect your NEO account and device by learning the correct ways to lock your screen or fully sign out of Windows 11.
📋 Before You Begin
  • You must be signed in to your NEO A&M College account on a Windows 11 device.
  • Lock keeps your session active and running — use it when stepping away briefly.
  • Sign out closes your session entirely — use it when leaving for the day or on a shared computer.
  • Always lock or sign out when leaving your device unattended to protect student and institutional data.

🔒 How to Lock Your Screen ⏱ ~10 seconds

Locking your screen keeps all your open programs and files running while requiring a password to return. Choose any method below:

Method A – Keyboard Shortcut (Fastest)

  1. Press Windows + L on your keyboard.
  2. Your screen locks immediately. Your session remains active in the background.
  3. To unlock, press any key or click the screen, then enter your NEO account password.

Method B – Start Menu

  1. Click the Start button.
  2. Click your account profile icon (your name or initials) at the top of the Start menu.
  3. Select Lock from the menu that appears.

Method C – Ctrl + Alt + Delete

  1. Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete.
  2. Click Lock from the options on screen.
💡 Tip: Windows + L is the fastest and most reliable method — it works from anywhere, even if the Start menu is unresponsive.

🚪 How to Sign Out ⏱ ~30 seconds

Signing out closes your Windows session and all open applications. Another user can then sign in with their own account.

Method A – Start Menu

  1. Click the Start button.
  2. Click your account profile icon at the top of the Start menu.
  3. Select Sign out.
  4. Windows will close all open programs and return to the sign-in screen.

Method B – Ctrl + Alt + Delete

  1. Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete.
  2. Click Sign out from the options on screen.
⚠️ Warning: Signing out will close all open programs. Make sure you have saved all your work before signing out — any unsaved changes will be lost.

🤔 Lock vs. Sign Out — Which Should You Use? ⏱ ~1 minute
🔒 Use Lock when:
  • You are stepping away from your desk briefly (lunch, meeting, restroom break).
  • You want to keep your open documents and programs running.
  • You are the only person who uses this device.
🚪 Use Sign Out when:
  • You are done working for the day.
  • You are using a shared or lab computer that other students or staff also use.
  • You want to free up system resources for the next user.
  • IT staff or a coworker needs to access the device under their own account.
💡 NEO Best Practice: On shared NEO lab computers, always Sign Out when finished. This ensures the next user gets a clean session and protects your account and files.
