🔐 How to Connect to the NEO VPN
Set up and sign in to the campus VPN for secure off-campus and remote access on Windows and macOS — and fix common connection problems.
✅ Before You Begin
- You need an active GoldKey account (your NEO username and password).
- You must be off campus — the VPN is only needed for remote access to campus resources.
- A stable internet connection (home Wi-Fi, hotspot, etc.).
- Administrator rights on your computer to install the Cisco Secure Client software.
1. Download the Cisco Secure Client ⏱️ ~5 minutes
- Open a web browser and go to osuvpn.okstate.edu.
- Sign in with your GoldKey account (your NEO username and password).
- After you sign in, the page provides a download for the Cisco Secure Client. Click the download link for your operating system.
- Save the installer to your computer (for example, your Downloads folder).
💡 Tip
If you already have the Cisco Secure Client installed from a previous setup, you can skip the download and go straight to the connect steps for your operating system.
2. Install & Connect on Windows ⏱️ ~5 minutes
- Open the downloaded installer and follow the prompts. Click Next, accept the agreement, and click Install.
- When installation finishes, click Finish.
- Open the Start menu and launch Cisco Secure Client.
- In the connection box, type osuvpn.okstate.edu and click Connect.
- Enter your GoldKey username and password when prompted, then complete any multi-factor authentication if requested.
- Once connected, you will see a lock icon in your system tray confirming the VPN is active.
3. Install & Connect on macOS ⏱️ ~5 minutes
- Open the downloaded Cisco Secure Client installer package (.pkg file).
- Follow the prompts: click Continue, then Install. Enter your Mac password to authorize the installation.
- If prompted under System Settings > Privacy & Security, click Allow to approve the Cisco system extension.
- Open Cisco Secure Client from your Applications folder or Launchpad.
- Type osuvpn.okstate.edu in the connection box and click Connect.
- Sign in with your GoldKey username and password and complete multi-factor authentication if requested.
4. Disconnecting from the VPN ⏱️ ~1 minute
- Open Cisco Secure Client from the system tray (Windows) or menu bar (macOS).
- Click Disconnect.
- You can leave the software installed for the next time you need remote access.
⚠️ Warning
Only connect to the VPN when you actually need to reach campus resources from off campus. Staying connected unnecessarily can slow your everyday browsing, since your traffic is routed through the campus network.
5. Troubleshooting: VPN Won't Connect or Keeps Dropping ⏱️ ~10 minutes
- Check your internet first. Make sure you can browse the web without the VPN. If your underlying connection is unstable, the VPN will also drop.
- Confirm the address. The connection address must be exactly osuvpn.okstate.edu with no typos.
- Verify your GoldKey credentials. If your password recently changed, use the new one. Repeated failures may lock your account temporarily.
- Restart the client. Fully quit Cisco Secure Client and reopen it, then try connecting again.
- Restart your computer. This clears network adapter issues that commonly cause drops.
- Switch networks. Some public, hotel, or guest Wi-Fi networks block VPN traffic. Try a phone hotspot to test.
- Reinstall the client. If problems continue, uninstall Cisco Secure Client, then download and reinstall it from osuvpn.okstate.edu.
💡 Tip
Frequent disconnects are most often caused by a weak Wi-Fi signal rather than the VPN itself. Moving closer to your router or using a wired connection usually resolves repeated drops.
