š Minimum Specifications ā±ļø ~1 minute ⢠Best for: email, Canvas, papers, video calls
This is the least a laptop should have to work smoothly for NEO coursework. If a laptop you're considering falls below any of these, keep shopping.
- Processor: Intel Core i3 or equivalent ā for instance, an AMD Ryzen 3 is a similar choice.
- Memory: 8GB of RAM. This allows smoother multitasking, especially with memory-hungry apps like video conferencing tools.
- Storage: 256GB, and choose a Solid State Drive (SSD). SSDs are faster and more reliable than traditional hard drives, which improves the laptop's overall performance.
- Display: a 13 to 15-inch screen with at least 720p resolution. A higher resolution like 1080p gives clearer images and text.
- Operating System: Windows 11. (Windows 10 devices are no longer receiving free security updates from Microsoft.)
- Wi-Fi: supports at least 802.11ac (also called Wi-Fi 5).
- Battery life: at least 6ā8 hours ā important for using your laptop in classrooms and study spots where outlets aren't handy.
ā ļø A note about Chromebooks: Chromebooks may not support certain software applications needed for specific courses. If you're considering one, check with your instructor or the IT Help Desk first.
š Mid-Range Specifications ā Recommended for Most Students ā±ļø ~1 minute ⢠Best for: multitasking, most majors, lasting 4+ years
A good balance between performance and cost. A mid-range laptop handles more demanding coursework efficiently and won't feel slow after a year or two.
- Processor: Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen 5 ā a good balance between performance and cost that handles intensive tasks efficiently.
- Memory: 16GB of RAM for smoother multitasking with more complex software and applications.
- Storage: 512GB Solid State Drive (SSD) ā faster boot times and quicker software loading than a traditional hard drive.
- Display: 14 to 15.6-inch screen with Full HD (1920 Ć 1080) resolution for a clearer, more detailed picture.
- Operating System: Windows 11 Home or Pro. Note: some software used in certain fields may only run on specific operating systems.
- Wi-Fi: Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) or Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax).
- Battery life: at least 8 hours ā enough to last a full day of classes and studying.
- Graphics: integrated graphics (like Intel Iris Plus or AMD Vega) are usually enough. For graphic-intensive work ā video editing, graphic design, gaming ā look for a dedicated graphics card like an NVIDIA GeForce GTX or AMD Radeon RX.
š” Tip: If your budget allows, prioritize 16GB of RAM and an SSD over a fancier processor ā those two upgrades make the biggest everyday difference.
š¬ High-End Specifications ā±ļø ~1 minute ⢠Best for: video editing, 3D work, design, engineering
For students in programs with heavy computing needs ā video editing, 3D rendering, and complex computational work.
- Processor: Intel Core i7 or AMD Ryzen 7 ā high performance for intensive tasks like video editing, 3D rendering, and complex computational work.
- Memory: 16GB to 32GB of RAM for smooth multitasking and memory-intensive applications.
- Storage: 1TB Solid State Drive (SSD) ā fast load times and plenty of room for large files and projects.
- Display: 15.6 to 17-inch screen with Full HD (1920 Ć 1080) resolution or higher. Some high-end laptops offer 4K for highly detailed visuals.
- Operating System: Windows 11 Pro.
- Wi-Fi: Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) for the fastest wireless connectivity and the best performance in crowded areas.
- Battery life: at least 8 hours, though heavy workloads will drain it faster.
- Graphics: a dedicated graphics card such as an NVIDIA GeForce RTX or AMD Radeon Pro ā necessary for 3D modeling, video editing, and gaming.
ā ļø Check with your program first: certain engineering, graphic design, or computer science courses may require even more specialized hardware. Always confirm with your academic department or NEO's IT Help Desk before making a big purchase.
š Already Own a Laptop? Check Its Specs ā±ļø ~2 minutes ⢠Requires: Windows 11
Before buying anything new, see how your current laptop measures up:
- Click Start, then open Settings.
- Go to System > About.
- Compare the Processor, Installed RAM, and Windows edition shown there against the tiers above.
- For a full walkthrough (including storage and graphics), see How to Check Your PC's Specs on Windows 11.
š” Tip: These are general recommendations ā actual needs vary by course. Programs involving graphic design, video editing, or heavy data processing may need a more powerful laptop. When in doubt, ask your academic department or NEO's IT Help Desk for tailored advice.
