π€ Fix Audio and Video Problems in Teams
Nobody can hear you, or you cannot hear them.
β
Before You Begin
- You need an active NEO A&M College account with SSO access
- Your headset or webcam plugged in before you start
- π Estimated time: 10 minutes

β‘ Check These First π ~2 minutes | Fixes most cases
In a meeting that has already started, work down this list in order. Most problems stop at step one or two.
- Are you muted? Check the microphone button in the meeting controls.
- Teams can mute you automatically when joining a large meeting.
- Is your headset switched on and charged? Bluetooth headsets that appear connected can still be asleep.
- Is the right device selected? Open the device settings from the meeting controls and check the microphone, speaker, and camera each point at what you are actually using.
- This is the single most common cause. A laptop docked to a monitor often defaults to the monitorβs speakers.
- Is your camera covered? Many laptops have a physical shutter or a function key that disables it.
π‘ Tip: Teams has a built-in test call that plays your voice back to you. Use it before an important meeting rather than during one.
π§ If It Still Does Not Work π ~5 minutes | Deeper causes
β οΈ Note: These steps come from Microsoftβs current published documentation rather than from a walkthrough on a NEO computer. The button names should match; if yours differ, tell the Help Desk so this article can be corrected.
- Another app has the camera. Close Zoom, the Camera app, and any other Teams or browser window that might be holding it.
- Only one app can use a webcam at a time. This is the usual cause of a black camera image.
- Leave and rejoin the meeting. Faster than restarting Teams and fixes a surprising amount.
- Restart Teams completely, including from the system tray so it is not just minimized.
- Try the browser version at teams.microsoft.com. If it works there, the problem is the app on that computer, not your account or your hardware.
- Restart the computer. This clears audio devices that have got into a bad state.
π‘ Tip: Tell the Help Desk whether the browser version worked. That one fact separates an app problem from a hardware problem and saves a round of questions.
π₯ When It Is Not You π ~2 minutes | Worth knowing
- If one person sounds robotic or keeps freezing, the problem is at their end β usually their connection, not the meeting.
- If everyone sounds bad at once, suspect your own connection. Turn your camera off; video uses far more bandwidth than audio.
- Echo almost always comes from one person having both speakers and an open microphone in the same room. Muting when not speaking fixes it.
β οΈ Note: If you are in a room with several people on their own laptops, only one should have speakers and microphone on. The rest should join muted with audio off.
