New Student: Start Here

πŸŽ“ New Student: Start Here
Everything you need to set up in your first week, in the order that works.
βœ… Before You Begin
  • Your activation email from O-Key, sent to the personal email address you used to enroll β€” step 1 cannot start until it arrives
  • Your NEO admission information β€” your name and date of birth as NEO has them on record
  • A smartphone, for multifactor sign-in approval and your campus ID
  • πŸ• Estimated time: about 45 minutes for all six steps
⚠️ Do these in order. Every step below depends on the one before it. Activating your account first is what makes email, Canvas and everything else work β€” skipping ahead is the most common reason students get stuck.

1️⃣ Activate Your NEO Account πŸ• ~10 minutes  |  Do this first

Your GoldKey account is the single login for email, Canvas, myNEO, campus Wi-Fi and lab computers. Nothing else works until this is done.

⚠️ Watch for your activation email first. O-Key sends an activation email to the personal email address you used to enroll β€” not a NEO address, because you do not have one yet. You cannot activate your account until it arrives. Going to the activation page before then will not work; that is expected, and does not mean anything is wrong with your record. Check that account's junk or spam folder before calling.
πŸ“© No activation email? Contact Admissions, not IT
If the email is not in your personal inbox or its junk folder, contact NEO Admissions to check on your enrollment. They issue it β€” the IT Help Desk cannot send it or look it up for you.

➑️ Read: Activate Your New NEO Account in this knowledge base.

πŸ’‘ Tip: If the activation page sends you to a login screen, open it in a private / incognito window. An old sign-in session left over in your browser can bounce you to a login you are not supposed to need yet.

2️⃣ Set Up Duo on Your Phone πŸ• ~10 minutes  |  Phone required

Duo is the app that approves your sign-ins. You will be asked for it constantly, so set it up before you need it in a hurry.

➑️ Read: Set Up Duo Multifactor Authentication (MFA) in this knowledge base.

πŸ’‘ Tip: Add a second device while you are in there. Students who enrol only one phone are the students who end up locked out the week their phone breaks.

3️⃣ Get Into Your NEO Email πŸ• ~5 minutes

NEO email is the official way the college contacts you β€” financial aid, billing, enrollment and emergency notices all arrive there. Get it on your phone in week one.

➑️ Read: Access Your NEO Student Email in this knowledge base.

4️⃣ Log In to Canvas πŸ• ~5 minutes

Canvas is where your courses, assignments and grades live. Install the Canvas Student app too β€” that is where you will see due dates.

➑️ Read: Log In to Canvas at NEO in this knowledge base.

⚠️ Note: A course you enrolled in may not appear straight away, and instructors publish courses on their own schedule. That is normal right before a term starts β€” ask your instructor before calling IT.

5️⃣ Connect to Campus Wi-Fi πŸ• ~5 minutes

➑️ Read: How to Connect to NEO's Campus Wi-Fi in this knowledge base β€” it covers Windows, macOS, iPhone, iPad and Android. If it keeps dropping, see Wi-Fi Won't Connect or Keeps Disconnecting.

6️⃣ Set Up Your Mobile ID πŸ• ~10 minutes

Your NEO Mobile ID is your campus ID on your phone β€” it opens doors and works at campus registers.
